In 2016 I experienced a serious depression that almost consumed all the light in my life. It was a very painful but also enlightening period of time that allowed me to realize that we, as a society, have a big problem: we are not properly taking care of our mental health.
In the process of getting out of the dark hole I was in, I invested a lot of time in understanding myself and I realized I had spent my whole life learning skills, achieving degrees, reading books, but never paused to learn about me and to look inside.
That's when I started paying real attention to my emotions and my mind, and with the curious mindset of a journalist, I looked around and noticed that we have created a society that has no room for pausing, much less to look inside.
During my process to find the light in the tunnel, I was confronted with how difficult it can be to talk about mental health, and how critical it is that we not only take care of our emotions when we experience challenges, but also that we cultivate healthy minds to create better societies with happier, kinder and more productive individuals.
This is why I decided to invest some of my free time to help normalize the conversation about mental and emotional challenges. By sharing my own personal experience with depression, suicidal thoughts and panic attacks, supporting others to speak about their own challenges and seeking out help, and sharing useful information in the media, I hope I can inspire and empower many more to live mentally healthier and happier lives.
